2013 Christmas Ornaments

Each year for the last few years, I have painted Christmas ornaments as gifts for my family and friends.  This year I used clear glass bulbs and filled each with a layer of colored glitter.  I then painted a snowflake on each ornament on the exterior with acrylic paint.

A special project for my mom for Christmas.  It is made from a cork board and then push pins are later added to the bottom to make it into a necklace holder.

A Beginning Drawing assignment adding blue conte and background elements.  I touched up a couple areas that needed fixing from the move across country and had the piece framed and matted.

Though I'm disappointed that the semester had to end, I made just enough projects with my three art classes to perfectly fill up all the walls in my "studio"/spare room.

A Life Drawing assignment experimenting with the use of colored pencils.  This assignment helped with learning how to blend colors and work on a large scale.

A fun assignment with the Life Drawing class.  We were able to pick our own medium for this assignment; I chose to use a limited pallet of orange/pink, white, and green on a black page.  The drawing uses the dark of the page and also shows the impact of using complimentary colors.

The Chef

 We had a free day in our Life Drawing class to experiment with different mediums using the model.  Here is a sneak peek of the drawings I did.  I still have a few finishing touches to do on the color one at some point.

Typically I don't let myself make corrections to a piece after I've signed it, however with this painting there were a few areas that were bothering me and I decided they needed to be corrected before I entered it into another art show.

*4/10/13 - 5/2/13 - This painting is currently available for viewing and sale in the regional LCCC student art show at the Esther and John Clay Fine Arts Gallery on the LCCC campus in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

A Life Drawing assignment experimenting with the use of color hard, medium, and soft pastels on a neutral colored sanded pastel paper page.  The sanded pastel paper presents a rough grainy texture which is more uniform than a regular pastel paper.

I felt like I needed a little extra practice using the color pastels on the colored page after the last class assignment before I continue with my current assignment.

Wheat Field with Cypresses

A tribute to my favorite artist of all time, Vincent Van Gogh.  

I never realized exactly how detail oriented and precise his works were until I painted this piece.  The swirls of the sky in his works tend to distract from the realistic details that he includes in the rest of the pieces.  Painting this piece in acrylic posed an extra challenge; due to the quick drying time it was more difficult to give the illusion of textures similar to those seen in the original piece.
